When I was in Middle School, I had my first brush with fandom on the web through fan made sites. Obsessed with anime and lacking any information, I began to explore ernestly through geocities and web rings. Once I went on a printing spree at the local library and the poor librarian had to ask me to kindly stop printing -- oops! After that, I scoured the internet for Japanese fan artists -- I was in love with their personal websites, the layouts, designs, and even though I had no idea what they were saying, there was a connection there because of their site. I remember going through my bookmarks each day, trying to see who had updated. This was before even myspace had kicked off and the only way to get community was through deviantart and livejournal.
When I lived with my grandparents, they had Microsoft Frontpage. I didn't know how to get stuff hosted or published, but I did spend lots of time creating my own little fan sites...
Although I still use social media, I felt like I wasn't getting the granular experience of owning a website that I could control. Too many websites offer you the chance to stick your pictures into their premade boxes, but it doesn't always fit or look right. I wanted that control for myself, a place where I could speak my mind and not feel pressured to filter myself. My website can be whatever I want it to be! And I feel more free to be myself.
